A young Marietta man is facing a litany of serious charges, including driving under the influence (DUI), and the case underscores the fact that even young drivers can be charged with DUI in Marietta under Georgia Laws, and may face long-term consequences. According to local news reports, earlier this month, on August 3, a 19-year-old Marietta man was arrested for his involvement in “laying drags and fleeing police.” The teen allegedly “…did a “burnout” and accelerated his vehicle at a high rate of speed at the intersection of Pair and Austell roads, which caused him to “fish tail” as he sped down the road. He also turned off his vehicle’s lights before attempting to flee a police traffic stop. He reached speeds in excess of 90 mph on Austell Road, blowing past motorists, according to the warrant.” The young man was reported to have been operating a 1994 1200 XL Sport when the incident occurred. The 19-year-old teen was reported to have “failed to negotiate a curve” on Hurt Road near the intersection of Old Tennessee Road. The teen then crashed into a wooden fence. When he was taken into police custody, officers indicated that the teen “had glassy and bloodshot eyes along with a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and slurred speech….” The teen now faces charges related to the driving offenses (including laying drags, driving with no headlights, driving with no tail lights, attempting to elude police, etc.) and driving under the influence offenses. It remains to be seen what will happen in the case, and whether the young Marietta man will be convicted of any of the charges against him.
